The real anti-talent purpose of this requirement was nothing but overworking High IQs in order to break them down. Before the corporations can make prostitutes of a STEM employee, they have to put him through a rape room.
Being broken on the rack of workoholism is why oncologists haven't cured cancer. It does no good to waste billions in funding research after the researchers have been crippled by indentured-servitude education. An oncologist doesn't earn a living until he is 30 years old! If you live like a child, you will end up having the mind of a child.
A slave society can only produce so much. But the Grind does benefit Greedhead corporate parasites, as in the typical case where Kary Mullis got a $30,000 bonus while his bosses at Cetus got $300,000,000 for their totally owned patent on his totally self-created work. The slave university is the Goose That Lays the Golden Eggheads. That gold must be returned to its proper owners.
The Grind also destroys its victims, such as John Nash. It creates absent-mindedness, as was famous in the case of Einstein, and inability to cope with day-to-day life. It makes its victims helpless in social and sexual interactions. Eggheads get hen-pecked.

They are too far gone and too stuck in their own escapism to deserve any sympathy, which is the real reason Kary Mullis and John Nash got their Nobel Prizes.
